2008 Annual Meeting News
Welcome 2008-2009 Board Members
The board has some new faces this year.
Laura Kenny stepped forward to fill the open Social Director role that was previously fill by Bea Stephenson. Bea served the board for many years and was greatly missed after her decision to resign in 2007. Bea, Thank you for all you have done over the years! And thank you Laura for fillinig this critical role. I think I speak for all board members when I say we could not carry on with social activities without you!
Mark and Marcia Francis came forward to fill the Communications Director role. This spot has been vacant for some time and it has been sorely missed. I know many residents have missed having regular newsletters.
Please join me in thanking these individuals for stepping forward to help our litte community. The 2008-2009 Board members are listed below. Click here for a detailed listing including contact information:

Reminders From The Board
Storm Sewer Maintenance
Folks, we own the maintenance of the storm sewer system in this neighborhood. It is in all of our best interest to keep these sewers as clean as possible. Here are ways you can help:
- Keep yard waste and other debris off the street in front of your house.
- If you have a storm drain adjacent to your lot, keep the grate clean of debris
- Alert the board immediately if you suspect a problem with a storm drain in the subdivision.
Architectural Process
Spring is here, which means that many homeowners will be planning their annual home improvement projects. Please be aware that plans for any permanent structure must be submitted to the board for approval before obtaining a permit from the township. See Article I – Architectural Control of the Highland Valley Declaration of Restrictions for a complete description of the architectural review process.
Temporary Pools
As the weather warms up residents will be looking for fun ways to cool off and enjoy the heat of summer. Please be advised of the Highland Valley Declaration of Restrictions regarding temporary pools in our subdivision. In addition to other requirements, pools must not exceed 12 feet in diameter and 2 feet in water depth. Please see Article II – Building and Use Restrictions For the Subdivision, Section 8, item g for clarity on the subject of temporary pools. For the most part, these restrictions reflect the current ordinance in effect in Highland Township with respect to pools.
Weed Control
Please take care to ensure your lawn is suitably maintained at all times during this growing season. The Highland Valley Declaration of Restrictions clearly state that lots and drainage ditches must be kept free of weeds and grass may never exceed 6 inches in height. Use your common sense. Nobody is going to get bent out of shape over a few weeds in your lawn or a few missed lawn cuttings. After all, we all have lives beyond our lots. But please do control the excessive growth of weeds on your premises and don’t let the lawn repeatedly grow out of control.

2007 Annual Meeting News
Four hearty Highland Valley Homeowners braved the misty mild weather to attend the 2007 Highland Valley Annual Meeting, marking a new low in attendance. Apparently moving the meeting from a weekend to a week night was not an attendance booster. The entire board was on hand to preside over the meeting. Here are some highlights from the meeting. The unapproved minutes are available upon request by contacting Doug Cyporyn
Neighborhood Watch
Sergeant Hatfield of the Oakland County Sherriff department was on hand to review neighborhood security concerns and share information about how to set up a neighborhood watch program. Sergeant Hatfield stressed the importance of keeping garage doors closed and cars locked. He also said that Thursday through Saturday were the most popular days for when garages, cars and homes get entered. He then walked us through a typical neighborhood watch program.
A neighborhood watch program works in conjunction with the local authorities to be the eyes and ears in the sub for any suspicious activity. The first step to setting up a program is to get volunteers from the community to come together and get organized. Once that happens, a schedule needs to be put in place so that everyone knows when the watch is in effect and who is on watch. This schedule must be communicated to the local authorities along with descriptions of the persons on watch as well as their cars so that the sheriff knows to whom they are responding when a call comes in. Sergeant Hatfield stressed many times that the main function of the watch is to be “eyes and ears only”. Under now circumstances should anyone participating in a neighborhood watch carry a concealed weapon or get involved with apprehending a person.
Sergeant Hatfield stressed that his office has limited manpower to patrol Highland Township and that he relies on the residents to be the eyes and ears. Call any complaints into the substation on John St. at (248) 887-6240. You can also call in to the dispatch center at (248) 858-4950. Of course, in case of emergency, you can always call 911, but it is not necessarily the most direct route to the Sheriff.
